3 Simple Ways to Boost Your Instagram Engagement

blog content cta engagement insights Sep 22, 2025

Let’s be honest—Instagram engagement can feel like a bit of a mystery.

You’re showing up. You’re posting. You’re using your hashtags and maybe even braving the odd Reel.

But still… your post lands as flat as a pancake at a carb-free brunch.

If you’re wondering why your content isn’t getting the likes, comments or shares it deserves, don’t stress—you’re not alone.

The good news? There are some easy things you can do to turn things around (no trendy dance routines required).

  1. Post at the right time (not just when you remember)

It sounds obvious, but it’s one of the most common mistakes I see. You’ve spent time creating a post, writing the caption, picking the perfect image… and then you chuck it out mid-afternoon when your audience is nowhere to be found.

Instagram isn’t just about what you post—it’s when you post too.

To fix this, head to your Insights (you’ll find them inside your Professional Dashboard) and take a look at when your followers are most active. It’ll show you which days and times your audience is most likely to be scrolling.

Posting when your followers are online = better chance of being seen = more engagement.

There’s a full walkthrough of how to check your best times (and use them strategically) inside the Members Area, so if you’ve never looked at your Insights before, that’s a great place to start.

  1. Nail the hook—your first line matters

You’ve got seconds to grab attention on Instagram—so your opening line needs to stop the scroll.

Think about your first line like the headline of a newspaper. If it doesn’t spark interest, curiosity or emotion, people won’t bother to read the rest.

Here are a few examples:

  • “I nearly quit my business last week…”
  • “Struggling to get engagement? Try this.”
  • “The biggest mistake I see small businesses making on Instagram…”

These types of openers make people want to click more—and if they read your caption, they’re far more likely to interact with it too.

Inside the Members Area, we’ve got training on writing captions that actually convert—including tons of hooks you can copy and paste straight into your content.

  1. Give people something to do—ask for engagement!

Here’s the thing: if you want more engagement… you need to invite it.

Instagram is a conversation, not a broadcast. So instead of just sharing your thoughts and disappearing—ask people to share theirs too.

End your posts with something like:

  • “What do you think?”
  • “Has this ever happened to you?”
  • “Comment with your favourite...”
  • “Tag someone who needs to hear this today”

Even something as simple as “double tap if you agree” can work wonders.

The goal is to make it easy for people to respond. Once you get a comment—reply to it! That back-and-forth is what tells the algorithm that people are interested in your content.

The more interaction you get, the more visible your content becomes. It’s a virtuous circle.
